I wanted to use gingham because of the material’s traditional, stereotypical connotations in sewing and embroidery and juxtapose that with the stark image of the skull. Rendering the skull in sequins adds a further layer of contrast.
The clash created by the mix of image, material and medium in the further context of the
Baroquestyle frame erodes the division between high and low art, between crafthobbyist
and serious artist. It also explodes the twee conceptions of feminine domesticity that still linger in society.
